Forewarning: I have a capslock/full throttle issue, basically all I talk about is various super attractive fictional people and how much I feel they should be making out, I find nothing on youtube as hilarious as I find this, I live in a near-constant state of nostalgia, I like lame things, by the time I get around to seeing the hip movies they are no longer hip, I only shower every other day, I think new shoes are exciting news, I maintain a secret fondness for Lindsay Lohan (PARENT TRAP, dammit), 93% of the time I will pick fun TV over good TV, my most dominant personality trait is contrariness, my favorite sport will probably always be figure skating, I am boring.

But if you want to be friends anyway, this is the place to ask.

Okay I can't decide if this is going to totally stress me out or be amazing or great fun or all three at once, BUT UM, HEY:

Comment with the name of a character, pairing, etc in one of my fandoms. I'll post you an "instant" mini-fanmix: a cover and 3-5 songs that remind me of that character/pairing/show/etc. I'll upload the songs and everything.

Okay, will someone please explain to me what is misogynistic about Sex and the City?

(AND JUST TO CLARIFY: This is not a question of to watch or not to watch or good or not good. I think there are a thousand and one legitimate criticisms/reasons not to watch Sex and the City. I just can't wrap my head around how misogyny/sexism can be one of them. IF I AM BEING DENSE, PROVE ME WRONG.)

INTERNET, I NEED TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING I LOVE AND THEN WHAT BOTHERS ME ABOUT IT!
RE: TOM PARIS AND B'ELANNA TORRES )

Valuable life lessons I have learned in the last two days: YOU DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET TALKED INTO PICNICKING WITH ESTRANGED HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS, and also you should... check your gas levels? When you drive?

OMG YOU GUYS WE JUST WATCHED
~*~RESOLUTIONS~*~

AND THIS SHIT IS HILARIOUS.

YOU SEE... once upon a time, when they were marooned on a planet ~forever alone together~ in their little log cabin (except of course they were back on the ship by the end of the episode), the Captain made the mistake of telling Chakotay that he could call her "Kathryn". AND HE THOUGHT... "OOOOH, MAYBE THIS MEANS I CAN GET LAID!!!!"

AND SO BEGAN CHAKOTAY'S QUEST FOR A PIECE OF ASS )

Oh, and C-Catherine? I... have a present for you.

If the various Star Trek series were cop shows, the original series would be Starsky & Hutch, the Next Generation would be CSI, Deep Space 9 would be the Wire (except only at like, 60% intensity, it is still in space), Voyager would be Bones, and Enterprise would be CSI: Miami.

THINK ABOUT IT.

So [info]goldenmelisande and I decided to rewatch Voyager (and, eventually/concurrently/WHO KNOWS WHEN DS9, which is more complicated since the entire series is not up on youtube) AND OH MY GOD, it... is maybe the most delightful thing? I MEAN OKAY, there are parts you have to suffer through -- Neelix and Kes having romantic beats (EW), the Kazon and their stupid ugly hair, and about 50% of the holoprograms are suuuuuper awkward (JANEWAY EYRE IS THE WORST, ick, but Sandriiiiiine's totally makes up for it), and then last night, after a run of three AWESOME episode the show BETRAYED US WITH... really gross hallucinations, but then it's just... Voyager. Objectively I can understand why a person would think that it's crap (except I can't, BECAUSE IT HAS B'ELANNA TORRES) but this show is... my youth. IT'S RUBBER, YOU'RE GLUE, AND ALL YOUR CRITICISMS BOUNCE OFF IT AND STICK TO YOU.

ANYWAY WE JUST WATCHED "PARTURTION" SO... LET'S TALK ABOUT KATHRYN JANEWAY'S HAIR? )

A little over a month ago, [info]whalelines linked me to this article, entitled "The Benefits of Distraction and Overstimulation". It is about things that are brought up all the time: how the internet/your cell phone/today's world has changed your brain chemistry. It's a really good article -- Anderson's writing is very engaging -- that feels like a pun but it also doesn't and for the record it isn't -- (this sentence is starting to feel like the grammatical equivalent of cultural ADHD) (oh god I'm making it worse), but the first time I was reading it I had to get up in the middle of it because this article, and everything like it, are talking about me. There are a hundred fifty-year-old psychologists/researchers writing up books, articles, studies, and blog posts about why every so often I will realize I've lost an hour watching videos of four-year-old gymnasts for the last five minutes.

BUT DON'T WORRY I'M NOT GOING TO GET ALL DEEP AND PHILOSOPHICAL ABOUT THIS TONIGHT, this is totally about the internet.

Anyway I was reminded of the article because tonight I was thinking like those people. BECAUSE LJ IS SLOW. You guys have totally noticed too, I've seen it mentioned more than once while flisting, and the uprise in the number of tumblr users in the last couple of weeks seems... like an obvious scapegoat? Which then incites a curmudgeony reaction in me, because that is... the person I am. ("WHY IS MICROBLOGGING ALL THE RAGE? Maybe I don't want to post short things! I LIKE A LOT OF WORDS"). WHICH IS SUPER HYPOCRITICAL, because like... I do have twitter. I hate the stupid character limit (200 IS A MUCH MORE REASONABLE NUMBER) but I have it, and I've probably had it longer than most of you (according to that one website that tells you when you signed up: 2 years. WEIRD.)

The thing is that twitter -- and, from what I understand, tumblr -- is kind of a double-edged sword. You can post your thoughts/that hilarious youtube vid/the .gif your friend linked you to without having to write a lot of words of explanation like you would if you were posting it here. What you end up with is a conglomerate of half-thoughts, some of which, in a pre-microblogging world, would have gotten posted on your LJ, and some of which would have gotten lost in the ether of your memory. We all get more out, but the result is: less posting here. And it's not that this new way of interacting is really a threat to our old way of interacting: I think everyone loves this site for the same reasons I do -- the wordiness, the fic, and those really really lovely long thready conversations you can get into.

BUT ME BEING ME, I WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. How you flip between/utilize the three (or two, or if you still only use LJ, why you still only use LJ), how they've changed your ~internet experience~, HOW YOU FEEL. Pleaaaase? Also I have a poll for my own nefarious curiosity/statistical purposes:
